The most expensive way to keep your house cool and comfortable is with the use of an air conditioning unit. Since running the air conditioning can be so expensive, many people are opting to use fans instead.
Fans are an excellent way to stay cool. They get the air in your home circulating and when air is moving it always feels more comfortable then when it is stagnate. However, most fans are quite large and will move the air in an entire room, moving this much air still requires a great deal of energy. If you are the only person in a room, you might want to consider a small fan that only moves the air directly surrounding you. Since the small fan is moving less air, it is also using considerably less energy than you larger floor or ceiling fans.
Another thing you will notice when you start shopping for small fan is that most of them run on alternative energy sources. Whereas large fans all use AC/DC for their power, many small fans run on battery power. Some small fans are so efficient that just 4 D-cell batteries can power them for as long as 300 hours. Some small fans that are meant to be used on a desk to cool a work space, plug directly into your computer's USB port. Many of these small fans also act as a USB hub, allowing you to use them to power your computer mouse, add tunes to your iPod, and attach a USB drive while staying cool.

Since they only move a small amount of air, small fans usually only cool the person sitting nearest to the fan; this cuts back on the complaints from other people in the room who are upset because they are to cold. Because small fans are lightweight, they are easy to move, even for people who are unable to lift a great deal of weight do to medical reasons. Since they don't take up much space, they are ideal for offices, small apartments, dorm rooms, and campers.
